Frostpunk 2, now one of the highest-rated new game releases of 2024, won’t be hitting Xbox Game Pass on consoles until some time in 2025. Xbox Game Pass has had a wild year so far, with plenty of exciting day one games and some not-so-exciting structural changes that have left some fans upset.

Xbox Game Pass price hikes have predictably been met with disdain, and then the fact that many day one games are now being relegated to the Ultimate tier has also not gone over well. Still, Microsoft remains committed to its Game Pass vision, which means that it will continue releasing its own first-party games on the service while also securing deals with third-party partners to feature their games as well.

One such third-party game is Frostpunk 2 from 11 Bit Studios. Frostpunk 2 will debut on PC Game Pass the very day of its release, September 20, giving subscribers on that platform the chance to see what the critically-acclaimed game is all about. Like its predecessor, Frostpunk 2 reviews have been highly positive, with many praising the city-building survival game as a worthy follow-up. Considering how well-received Frostpunk 2 has been, it’s no surprise that console gamers want to get in on the action as soon as possible, but unfortunately, they will have to wait until an undetermined point in 2025 to play the game.

Frostpunk 2 Console Version Coming in 2025

This was recently confirmed by 11 Bit Studios on Twitter, responding to a fan inquiry about how the game isn’t currently appearing on the PS5’s PlayStation Store. 11 Bit’s response mentioned that Frostpunk 2‘s console version will be coming in 2025. In turn, this means that Xbox Game Pass subscribers on consoles can expect Frostpunk 2 to be one of their day one games for next year. While some fans are happy to have some clarification about when they can play Frostpunk 2 on their platform of choice, others have voiced their disappointment that they have to wait such a long time after the PC version drops to play it.

Frostpunk 2 being PC only at launch has made the second half of September 2024 a rather bare one for Game Pass subscribers on consoles. Really the only game they have to look forward to these next couple of weeks is Wargroove 2, and that’s exclusive to the Ultimate tier. Ara: History Untold is another day one game coming to Game Pass in the second half of September 2024, but like Frostpunk 2, it’s PC only. Also like Frostpunk 2, Ara has a console version waiting in the wings, though it’s unclear when it will be available to the masses.
